As mentioned on the homepage I’m currently lecturing in mathematics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
I’m not from Indiana, but was born and raised in rural southern Michigan and most of my family, with the exception of my younger brother in New Jersey, still lives in that state. I went to Wayne State University in Detroit for my undergrad degree, which is also in mathematics.
My interest in mathematics only really started when I took calculus in college. I took calculus because I wanted to be an engineer but ended up liking mathematics so much that I switched majors. I suppose that my interest in PDEs and especially applications is probably a product of my engineering background.
I’ve been blessed with some great teachers during the course of my studies. I owe a debt to Jeffery Parent, my calculus teacher, William Cohn, who was my undergraduate mentor and introduced me both to rigorous proof writing and mathematical analysis, the late Jim Veneri, who was the beating heart of WSU undergrad mathematics when I was there, and of course my adviser Donatella Danielli. Her advice, encouragement and instruction were invaluable during my graduate studies.
Outside of mathematics, I enjoy cooking, riding my bicyles, designing and constructing electo-mechanical contraptions, and playing pool (eight ball mostly).
If you’d like to contact me, my email is: tbacking “at” purdue “dot” edu.
